Audits vs Examinations

in AUD

I feel dumb for even posting this, but I finally figured out the difference between Audits and Examinations all thanks to my Yaeger videos.  Previously, I tried to memorize definitions because that’s how the Gleim book is written and just gave my best guess on practice questions.

After watching my Yaeger AUD Disk 1 (on 2.00x playback using VLC Player) I heard Gary mention that historically the terms “audit” and “examination” were used interchangeably, but within the last couple of years a standard/pronouncement/statement was issued that defined the terms.

I remember always struggling with Audits vs Examinations or Audit vs Attestation because the definitions in the standards are generally vague which makes it difficult to make a distinction among the terms.  Since Audits and Examinations were used interchangeably in the past, I now understand why my college Auditing course was so damn confusing.  I actually remember a few instances while reading my audit textbook where the textbook author forgot to update his book and used the terms interchangeably.

So without any further mention of my college auditing course, here is a quick, more technical summary:

AUD Notes for Wiley Module 1: Engagement Planning and Assessing Risk

Audits vs Examinations

Audits and Examinations used to be used interchangeably to describe the highest level of assurance.  The standards now specify that the terms are no longer the same.

  • Audits = an audit is an attestation service that deal with Historical Financial Statements and provide the highest level of assurance (aka Reasonable Assurance)
  • Examinations = an examination is an attestation service that deal with anything other than Historical financial statements (including non-financial data) and provide the highest level of assurance

Other related concepts:

GAAS vs Attestation Standards

Historical Financial Statements (ARC*) vs Anything Other than Historical Financial Statements (ERAup*)

Attestation Services vs Assurance Services vs Consulting Services

Attestation Services vs Non-attestation Services

Attest Function vs Assurance Function

*E-R-Aup = Examinations-Reviews-Agreed Upon Procedures

I plan to update this later with detail on the related concepts and maybe some diagrams if I have time.

This is what I get for paying my Exam Fee Coupon 2 weeks before the testing window closes…

My Audit retake is scheduled for November 30 at 3:00 AM.  And no that’s not a typo, it’s at 3 o’clock in the morning.

While looking up openings, I called the Prometric center to double check that “3:00 AM” was not a typo.  Before I could even ask my question the guy on the phone said, “If this is for the CPA exam, then yes, 3 AM is correct. It is not a typo.”

About 2 hours later after receiving my exam schedule confirmation email, I got a phone call from the National Manager of Prometric in Houston.  He personally called me to confirm that I was aware my exam was scheduled for 3 AM and not 3 PM (wonderful customer service!).  We chit-chatted for a bit and I found out that 3 Prometric locations in Houston are opening at 2 AM to accommodate all those procrastinating future CPA’s.  He said that in the final window exam spots fill up so quickly and it has been tradition for some locations to open their doors 5 hours early so they can squeeze in a few more candidates.  Of course, he mentioned that this year there was an increased demand due to the coming 2011 CBT-e exam changes (PDF).

BTW, I live in Dallas and all the locations in Dallas were filled.  I then checked surrounding cities and found that most were filled or the open dates were earlier than I desired.  So I’ll be driving down to Katy, TX on Sunday.  Luckily, a college buddy of mine happens to live 20 minutes away from the Prometric center.  I thought of getting a hotel because I know I’ll be stressed and anxious the day before my exam.  Since my exam is at 3am it kinda works out that my friend will be at work and I’ll have the place to myself for prayer and meditation.  I’ll probably sleep all day Monday, wake up in the early evening, do my confidence jig, take my exam, and get chocolate wasted all before 9 am….

Oh yeahz, I forgot to mention that I posted that I scheduled my exam on my twitter 2 days ago.  So if you want the most up to date news (likely) and have a twitter page (unlikely, nobody knows what it is or how to use it…), feel free to follow me: twitter.com/cpa2blog.  I need to start tweeting more because it’s kinda meh that my twitter is full of auto-blogpost notifications.

What have I been up to for the past 2 months?

Short answer:  I stopped studying for these past 2 months and took a break to reconnect with friends and family that I had been ignoring.

After my application to sit for the exam was approved in January 2010, I prohibited myself from going out and committed myself to studying.  In June, I broke up with my girlfriend of 2.5 years so that I’d could isolate myself from all distractions and spend all my time worrying over the exam.  I didn’t realize my mistakes until October and by then it was too late.

I realize now that I should not have let the CPA exam takeover my life.  I should not have put so much stock in the stories posted by other candidates on CPA exam forums.  I hyped the difficulty of the CPA exam way out of proportion and overcomplicated things.

Currently, I’m waiting on Prometric to get my eligibility app so that I can pay and schedule my AUD exam.  After my AUD exam, I will start studying again for the GMAT with plans to take it in January and then REG in late February.  Tentative exam dates:

  • AUD – Nov 20
  • GMAT – January 28
  • REG – Feb 28

This is my answer for now.  I might do a longer version, but it’d probably read like a diary entry of a depressed loner, lol
