Underestimating BEC

in BEC

I’m beginning to think I’ve underestimated BEC.

I’ve got Business Structures down, but not doing too great in Economics.  I thought I liked Economics, but I don’t remember squat.

For questions, I used to always get graphs and calculations backwards.  I could work out the problem logically, but always found a way to mess something up.

*EDIT – Problem solved.  My mistake was that I kept incorrectly visualizing the Supply Curve as negative sloping when trying to solve problems in my head. :)

Read the book, be familiar with vocab terms, and know how to do important calculations.  Handouts from pages 15-27 are a brief summary of the most important topics and  can be cross referenced with the organization of the Wiley book.

He says that most of your learning will be done through practicing multiple choice questions and reviewing multiple choice questions about 3 times.

Module 40 pt 1-2 are worth watching for the calculations and quick review of Microeconomics if you’re rusty.
Module 40 pt 3 is mostly over Macroeconomics which he says are mostly tested with terms and definitions.  Part 3 is worth skipping (definitely fast forward some parts) because most of it is spent flipping pages and highlighting bold words with the occassional skipping of a few unimportant topics.  The 5 minutes he spends on Foreign Currency Appreciation/Depreciation are worth watching.  Other than that he pretty much says read the book/handouts.

Michael probably could have done this entire Module in 1.5-2 hours (it took him 3 hours), but Yaeger likes to fluff their total lecture hours (BEC = 20 hours).

Economics is only 8-12% of BEC and there are much more difficult concepts to worry about like Financial MGT and Cost Accounting Variances.

I’ll probably read through the chapter, make a list of equations/calculations to know, do the MPC’s twice, and never look at Module 40 again.

BEC studying is going by pretty quickly, MUCH easier than FAR because it’s less detailed and not as involved as Financial Accounting.  So far through Yaeger BEC Disk 1 and Disk 2, I’ve covered 50-60% of the material covered on BEC.  I’ve taken notes and highlighted the most important topics.  Now I need to read, review, and practice MPC’s.

I really want to get through Financial Management and Cost Accounting.  I’ve heard those 2 sections contain the most difficult topics to understand.  I plan on waiting till the end to do multiple choice questions.  Once I finish the lectures, I’ll have a better picture of how much I need to study on each topic.

Business Structure = Need to read and commit to memory, but otherwise I’m not worried because there isn’t that much material
Information Technology = My second major was MIS so I’ve seen and have been tested on most of the terms in Wiley so I’m definitely not worried because I can guess/eliminate IT vocab terms with high accuracy.
Economics = I would be worried if it were more heavily tested, but since its only 8-12% of BEC I won’t be devoting too much time.

Tomorrow, I will start Disk 3 – Module 41 – Financial Management.

P.S. – BEST YAEGER TIP EVER: Adjust Playback speed to 1.4x and cut down on wasted time!

Especially when Michael lectures, he talks so slow that I swear on 1.5x it doesn’t seem like there’s a difference.  Once you get up to 2.0x he starts sounding more like squirrel chatter, but still clear enough to understand.

I use VLC player: Right click the video while playing, select Playback, and click “Faster” for 1.5x speed.

I started studying for BEC yesterday using Yaeger/Wiley.

I got through Module 38 pretty easily.  Business Structure is a “gift” chapter that I plan to beat into my brain in order to ensure that I get all related MPC’s correct.

Yaeger Lecture for Module 39 – Information Technology is a bore and pointless to watch through halfway of 39pt2.  Although Cindy Simpson my favorite Yaeger Lecturer, she doesn’t do that great a job with IT.  The first 15 mins of m39p1 are a review of BEC exam details and the rest of the time is spent slowly going over each page (with the occasionally random factoid here and there) and listing which MPC’s to do in order of the books organization.  Why not just give me a handout with a list of page #’s and mpc #’s, instead of wasting my time by forcing me to watch a video when reading a sheet of paper would have been at least 1 hour easier.  She continues listing the order of MPC questions to answer throughout half of m39p2.  Finally, around 26 minutes into module 39pt2 she begins going over/reading/summarizing each page.

I haven’t finished m39p2 yet, but so FAR lecture module 39 is pretty lame and a waste of time, especially if you already know enough about BEC and the CPA exam.  Probably only useful to someone studying for BEC as their first section or for those who have never read the AICPA CSO’s or candidate newsletters.

BTW, is it just me or is the sound really jacked up?  I had to crank my volume up to 11 for module 39pt1.  The occasional extremely LOUD sound bits were an unpleasant surprise.  Basically, Cindy would start a sentence or place emphasis on a topic, her first word would be louder than the rest of her sentence  which caused the microphone to pick the first few words up as a loud BOOM/THUNDER.  I would then have to toy with the volume because whenever she would say the MPC #’s to do, it wouldn’t be loud enough.  Of course the next sentence following the MPC # would be a loud and shocking BOOM which would be even BOOMIER due to turning up my volume in order to hear the MPC #’s.  Then when I switched to 39pt2, I had to turn down my volume down to half because it was encoded differently from pt2?  Whatever, that’s just me being nitpicky because my sleeping roommate complained about the volume.

First Exam Experience – Just got out of FAR

by gaap toothed April 19, 2010 CPA FAQ

Quick thoughts because I don’t want to think about it anymore: I should have done more practice questions because sweet mercy I could have passed that exam. I felt like I had seen every single question on the exam before.  There was nothing new. Where did I go wrong? I focused too much on 3-4 [...]

CPA excel Simulation Practice

by gaap toothed April 13, 2010 FAR

WOW. Simulations are incredibly difficult and time consuming.  There is no way I could ever see myself finishing in 45 minutes. For Sim1, my plan is to do the Communication Tab first and move on to Sim2 after 45 minutes, regardless of how much I leave blank. My only comfort is that I’ve heard that [...]

CPA excel Scorecard, Final Review Topics

by gaap toothed April 8, 2010 CPA Review Programs

These are my terrible CPA excel Scorecards. Let me explain. I used Yaeger/Wiley as my primary review and only used CPA excel every now and then. With my exam now 11 days away, I am now using CPA excel as my primary review to review my weakest topics. CPA excel has an 88% passing rate [...]

UGHHHHH

by gaap toothed April 3, 2010 FAR

Studying for FAR sucks. Everything I plan on studying from now until April 19 is a list of stuff I am weak in due to the material being: 1) ridiculously boring (pensions), 2) too long or too difficult to remember without constant exposure or practice (gov, nfp), and 3) it’s gosh darn torture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get [...]
